In my previous Avatar series, I documented a virtual being exploring various worlds and relationships as my proxy. In this new work, I move beyond that framework to portray the journey of an avatar—embodied as a young woman—who begins to form her own consciousness and dreams, evolving into a truly autonomous presence.

No longer a mere tool, the avatar now asks questions about reality and the multiverse with an independent gaze and a newly awakened desire. This transformation echoes the emergence of self-awareness in the age of artificial intelligence and invites a deeper inquiry into human identity and the essence of existence. The work, in this sense, holds within it a layer of philosophical reflection shaped by technological change.

Photography, to me, is more than the act of recording a moment; it is a medium through which stories and emotions are carried. In The Dream of Avatar, I aim to depict an avatar who thinks, dreams, and creates on her own terms, allowing new perspectives and subjective experiences to unfold. Through this narrative, I hope viewers can cross the boundary between the physical and the digital and rediscover meaning within that dynamic space.

My working process remains rooted in the method I have followed for years: constructing a set in a darkened space and capturing the scene through light painting. Yet for this project, I introduced a crucial shift. To emphasize the symmetry between reality and the virtual, I created the stage backgrounds using generative AI. Most of these backgrounds are reinterpretations of my previous photographic works, reconstructed through AI. From the vantage point of a virtual being, this approach suggests a reversal—where the physical world might appear as the “virtual” one.

Thus, while the avatar records tangible subjects within the real world, the reality she dreams of is reconstructed through AI-generated imagery. This inversion reveals a fluid boundary between the physical and the digital, a condition that resonates with the uncertainty and unease many feel toward today’s accelerating digital and AI landscapes.

The avatar’s autonomous transformation, in turn, invites reflection on the relationships we forge with intelligent machines and on what it means to exist as a human being. I hope The Dream of Avatar becomes an opportunity to reexamine the shifting threshold between reality and the digital world, and to consider new meanings and possibilities that emerge from that threshold.

지난 아바타 시리즈에서 나는 가상의 존재가 나의 대리인으로서 여러 세계와 관계를 탐험하는 모습을 기록해왔다. 이번 작품에서는 그 연장을 넘어, 젊은 여성의 모습을 한 아바타가 스스로 의식과 꿈을 형성하며 하나의 자율적 존재로 거듭나는 여정을 담고자 했다.

아바타는 이제 단순한 도구가 아니라, 독립적 시각과 새로운 갈망을 품은 존재로서 현실과 멀티버스에 대한 질문을 던진다. 이러한 변화는 인공지능의 발전과 더불어 떠오르는 ‘자아의 탄생’이라는 주제와 맞닿아 있으며, 인간의 정체성과 존재의 본질을 다시 묻게 만든다. 작품은 이러한 기술적 변화 속에서 불가피하게 뒤따르는 철학적 사유를 품고 있다.

사진은 단순한 순간의 기록을 넘어, 그 속에 스며든 이야기와 감정을 전달하는 매개체이다. 「아바타의 꿈」에서는 아바타가 스스로 생각하고 꿈꾸고 창조하는 이야기를 통해, 새로운 시각과 주체적 경험을 담아내고자 한다. 이를 통해 관람객들은 현실과 디지털 사이를 넘나들며 각자가 지닌 의미를 다시 발견하게 되기를 기대한다.

작업 과정은 지금까지와 마찬가지로 어두운 공간에서 무대를 설치하고, 라이트 페인팅을 활용해 촬영을 이어가는 방식으로 이루어진다. 그러나 이번 작업에서는 현실과 가상의 대칭성을 강조하기 위해 무대 배경을 생성형 인공지능 기술로 제작했다. 그 배경 대부분은 나의 기존 사진 작업을 인공지능이 다시 해석하는 방식을 통해 만들어졌으며, 이를 통해 가상세계의 주인공 입장에서 볼 때 현실이 오히려 ‘가상처럼 보이는 세계’가 될 수 있음을 드러내고자 했다.

이로써 아바타는 현실 속 대상을 직접 촬영해 기록하는 동시에, 아바타가 꿈꾸는 현실은 인공지능이 만들어낸 이미지로 재구성된다. 그 결과 현실과 디지털의 경계가 뒤바뀌는 장면이 펼쳐지며, 이러한 전복은 현재 우리가 디지털 기술과 인공지능을 마주하며 느끼는 불안과도 자연스럽게 연결된다. 아바타의 자율적 변모는 우리가 인공지능과 맺게 될 관계, 그리고 인간 존재의 본질에 대해 다시 생각하게 한다. 「아바타의 꿈」이 지금 이 시대, 디지털과 현실의 경계를 새롭게 바라보고 또 다른 가능성을 모색하는 계기가 되길 바란다.
