I had many dreams from a young age. Even with just one small soldier figurine in my hand, I would defeat countless enemies in imaginary spaces, spreading my wings of imagination far and wide. Even without toys, I could create new soldiers and warships in my mind, sailing across the deep blue sea and battling enemies. Even as an adult entering society, whenever difficult times arose, I'd find myself sitting blankly in my chair, leaning back, only to suddenly discover myself standing in some imaginary world. Even now, closing my eyes brings the image of a space battleship to mind, and once my imagination takes flight, I find myself piloting that battleship through unnamed galaxies. It seems that deep within me, both then and now, there exists a powerful desire to escape the real world.

I still cannot forget the thrill and awe I felt when I first saw the movie Avatar. It was because everything I had ever dreamed of could be summed up in that single word: avatar. The small figurines I loved as a child, the imaginary battleships and spaceships, and the imaginary ‘other me’ – all of these were my avatars. The word ‘avatar’ originates from Sanskrit, meaning the physical form of a deity descended to the earthly world in Hinduism. Recently, it refers to a character that represents a user in cyberspace. My particular fondness for strategy simulation games is not unrelated to this. In games, I could muster courage I never dared to in the real world, defeat formidable foes, and conquer the world.

When I finally picked up a camera, photography created a new space for my imagination. While a camera is clearly a device that records subjects before its lens as they are, the photographs it produced did not always speak to reality. Through the camera, I could freely realize the imaginary worlds I dreamed of. Photographs created through stage setup, light painting, and multiple exposures allowed me to see the imaginary worlds I had long envisioned in reality. My avatar in the photographs could travel freely, without distinction between places I had visited and those I could never reach. I could even access the deepest recesses of my own mind through this avatar. The ‘other me’ I created could freely traverse other worlds, riding the camera like a dimensional travel device.

In the movie The Matrix, Morpheus told Neo, “Take the red pill, and you walk away from this life, back into your real world, living the life you've always believed to be real. Take the blue pill, and you stay in this life, living the life you've been living up until now.” Could I, in my current state, choose the red pill like Neo? I still haven't found the answer.

아바타

어릴 적부터 꿈이 많았다. 손에 든 작은 군인 피규어 하나를 가지고도 가상의 공간에서 무수히 많은 적들을 물리치며 온갖 상상의 나래를 펴곤 했다. 장난감이 없이도 머릿속에서 새로운 군인과 전함을 만들어 시퍼런 바다를 누비며 적들과 싸울 수 있었다. 성인이 되어 사회에 진출해서도 힘든 일이 생길 때 마다 의자에 기대어 멍하니 앉아 있자면 순간 어떤 상상의 세계에 서 있는 나를 발견하곤 했다. 지금도 눈을 감으면 우주전함의 모습이 떠오르고 일단 상상의 나래가 펼쳐지면 어느 듯 나는 우주전함을 타고 이름 모를 은하계를 비행하곤 한다. 예나 지금이나 마음속 한편에선 현실세계를 떠나고 싶은 강렬한 욕구가 존재하는 것 같다.

아바타라는 영화를 처음 보았을 때 느꼈던 감동과 전율은 아직도 잊을 수 없다. 그동안 내가 꿈꾸어왔던 모든 것이 아바타라는 단어 하나로 정리될 수 있었기 때문이다. 어릴 적 좋아했던 작은 피규어나 상상 속의 전함, 우주선 그리고 상상 속의 ‘또 다른 나’가 모두 나의 아바타였던 것이다. 아바타는 힌두교에서 지상 세계로 강림한 신의 육체적 형태를 뜻하는 산스크리트어에서 유래한 단어로 최근에는 사이버 공간에서 사용자의 역할을 대신하는 캐릭터를 의미한다. 내가 유독 전략 시뮬레이션 게임을 좋아하는 것도 이와 무관하지 않다. 게임 속에서는 현실세계에서 엄두도 내지 못했던 용기도 낼 수 있고, 강적을 꺾고 굴복시킬 수도 있으며, 세계를 평정할 수도 있는 것이다.

뒤늦게 사진기를 손에 들었을 때 사진은 나에게 새로운 상상의 공간을 만들어 주었다. 사진기는 분명 렌즈 앞의 피사체를 있는 그대로 기록하는 장치이지만 사진기를 통해 만들어진 사진이 항상 현실을 말하는 것은 아니었다. 사진기를 통해서도 얼마든지 내가 꿈꾸는 상상의 세계를 구현할 수 있었다. 무대설치와 라이트 페인팅, 다중노출을 통해 만들어지는 사진은 그동안 내가 꿈꾸어왔던 상상의 세계를 현실에서 볼 수 있게 해주었다. 사진속의 나의 아바타는 내가 가보지 못한 곳, 갈 수 없는 곳을 구분하지 않고 자유로이 여행할 수 있었다. 심지어 내 마음속 깊은 그 곳 까지도 아바타를 통해 접근할 수 있었다. 내가 만든 ‘또 다른 나’는 사진기라는 차원이동 장치를 타고 다른 세상으로 자유로이 다닐 수 있는 것이다.

영화 매트릭스에서 모비어스가 네오에게 “빨간약을 먹으면 당신이 현실이라고 생각하는 가상현실에서 벗어나 진짜 삶을 살 수 있고, 파란약을 먹으면 아무런 고민 없이 가상현실에 남을 수 있다.”라고 했다. 지금의 나라면 네오처럼 빨간약을 선택할 수 있을까? 아직도 답을 찾지 못하고 있다.
