When I began photography twelve years ago, the phrase “a photograph is a painting drawn with light” captured my attention. 

Though often used metaphorically, I believed it could be realized in a literal and practical way—and I have been pursuing that idea ever since. Every body of work I have created follows a distinctive process:

I build a stage-like installation inside a dark room;

I manually open the camera shutter;

I “paint” the scene with small lights in four colors;

I close the shutter;

and, when needed, I repeat this process as an in-camera multiple exposure to form a single image. The results are unquestionably photographs—yet they depict scenes that cannot exist in the real world.

Through this approach, I have been crafting a visual autobiography of my life.

In 2015, Starry Night recreated the fantastical world I dreamed of while gazing at the night sky as a child. In 2017, Puppet expressed the pain, trials, and the struggle for resilience I experienced in my early adulthood. In 2019, Avatar explored a world of imagination—an escape from harsh reality through an avatar traveling across an inner universe. And in 2024, Avatar II envisioned my inner femininity embodied as an avatar who journeys through new worlds and forms relationships within them. My work turns memories, dreams, and imagined landscapes—places that do not exist in reality—into photographs that do. This is possible only because of the unique method I have developed, a way of using light and the camera to bring the unseen into tangible form.

나는 12년 전 사진을 시작하며 “사진은 빛으로 그리는 그림”이라는 말에 마음이 깊이 끌렸다.

개념적으로만 들리던 그 문장이 실제로 구현될 수 있다고 믿었고, 그 믿음은 지금까지 나의 작업 전체를 이끌어왔다. 내가 만드는 모든 이미지는 다음과 같은 고유한 과정을 거쳐 탄생한다. 암실에 작은 무대를 설치하고, 카메라의 셔터를 수동으로 열어 둔 채 네 가지 색의 조명을 이용해 무대 위에 빛을 칠한다. 필요하다면 이 작업을 여러 번 반복해 다중 노출로 하나의 이미지를 완성한다. 결과물은 분명 카메라로 포착된 사진이지만, 현실에서는 존재하지 않는 세계를 품고 있다.

이 방식으로 나는 나의 삶을 사진이라는 형태의 자서전으로 기록해왔다.

2015년 ‘별이 빛나는 밤’에서는 어린 시절 밤하늘을 바라보며 꿈꾸던 환상의 세계를 담았고, 2017년 ‘꼭두각시’에서는 젊은 시절 사회 속에서 겪었던 상처와 시련, 그리고 그것을 극복하고자 했던 내면의 투쟁을 표현했다. 2019년 ‘아바타’는 고단한 현실에서 벗어나 또 다른 나를 통해 상상의 세계로 떠나는 여정을 그렸다. 그리고 2024년 ‘아바타 II’에서는 내면의 여성성을 아바타로 구현하여 새로운 세상과 관계를 맺는 모습을 담아냈다. 이처럼 나의 작업은 과거의 기억, 마음속에 남아 있는 감정, 아직 실제하지 않는 상상의 장면들을 현실로 끌어와 사진이라는 한 장의 프레임 안에 고정시키는 과정이다. 그것이 가능한 이유는 내가 오랫동안 다듬어온, 빛으로 그려내는 나만의 방식 덕분이다.
